Today it is hard to imagine Father John Misty, or Josh Tillman as he is actually named, as the drummer in Fleet Foxes. Not that there's anything wrong with being a drummer in Fleet Foxes, but mostly because it feels quite unnatural for such a natural performer to be anywhere other than in the spotlight. Few artists have more to say about their times than Father John Misty, and even fewer do so with the same attentive precision. The complex puzzle that consists of Father John Misty's music, his mythology, and his persona has always been confusing. But in this blessed mix of sincerity, satire, narcissism, and self-criticism, we find one of the best and most engaging artists of our time.
In 2018, Father John Misty released his fourth album 'God’s Favorite Customer' and just like his previous works, it was as beautiful as it was sharp; his crooning as well-measured as ever and his songwriting as shining. But something had changed. Tillman's perspective on the world was now more empathetic, humble, and tender. Now it's time for the next chapter in the story of Father John Misty. The fifth album 'Chloë and the Next 20th Century' will be released on April 8, and if we are to believe the singles, we will now hear a Tillman with dreams of old Hollywood.
