Richard Bona

About the show
Jazz, funk, afrobeat, pop, and fusion – the Cameroonian master bassist Richard Bona has the entire genre spectrum at his fingertips. His accolades include collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Pat Metheny, and Buena Vista Social Club, and a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
Bona grew up in Cameroon and discovered jazz early. In his twenties, he moved to Europe and established himself in jazz clubs alongside artists like Manu Dibango and Salif Keita.
When he arrived in New York in the mid-90s, there was talk of a new Jaco Pastorius. Indeed, Jaco was one of the reasons he picked up the electric bass, but it quickly became clear that Richard Bona had an entirely unique musical language. As the Los Angeles Times put it: "Imagine an artist with Jaco Pastorius's virtuosity, George Benson's vocal fluidity, Joao Gilberto's sense of song and harmony, all mixed up with African culture."
He comes to Cirkus with his quintet. A concert that moves freely between styles and moods, with groove as the guiding star and heartfelt storytelling that makes even large concert halls feel intimate.
