Archive: The Manhattan Transfer - The World Farewell Tour

About the show
The legendary quartet became the first group ever to win Grammy Awards in both pop and jazz categories in 1981. In 1985, the album “Vocalese” received the second most Grammy nominations, after Michael Jackson's “Thriller”.
The Manhattan Transfer's dynamic performances and sense of style have led them to become one of the most iconic groups in the world. With their creativity, energy, and joy, the group belongs to the entertainment industry's elite. Known for their unique sound, The Manhattan Transfer has recorded music with an impressive collection of artists, including Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, Laura Nyro, Phil Collins, B.B King, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, and Frankie Valli.
The group was formed when Tim Hauser was working as a taxi driver in New York. He aspired to form a vocal music group that could master a variety of styles and create something unique in American popular music. In his taxi, he met his future group members Laurel Massé, Janis Siegel, and Alan Paul. Together, the four became The Manhattan Transfer on October 1, 1972.
Shortly thereafter, the group began performing regularly around New York City at various clubs such as Trude Heller’s, Max’s Kansas City, and Club 82. They quickly became the number one live attraction in Manhattan. They signed with Atlantic Records and released their first album “The Manhattan Transfer” in 1975. The second single on the album, which was a cover of the gospel classic “Operator”, gave the group their first national hit, followed by “The Boy From New York City” and “Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone”. Their version of the jazz classic “Birdland” became the group's anthem and resulted in two Grammys.
Cheryl Bentyne joined the group in 1979, replacing Laurel. Trist Curless became a member of the group in 2014 after Tim Hauser's passing. Together, the four have maintained the integrity and artistry that Tim Hauser left behind.
The group has released 19 singles and 29 albums during their incredible career, and their music has been featured in a variety of films and TV series. In connection with their 50th anniversary last year, a new album was released accompanied by a symphony orchestra, as well as a historic CD box consisting of five discs.
With sold-out world tours and sales records in the millions, The Manhattan Transfer continues to create unique and extraordinary melodic and jazz-influenced music for new and old audiences spanning generations.
