About the Right Livelihood Award
The Right Livelihood Award, also known as the 'Alternative Nobel Prize', was founded in 1980 to honor and support courageous people who work exemplary to solve global problems. This year, the award is given for the 40th time, and over the years it has become one of the world's most prestigious awards in sustainability, peace, and social justice. The laureates are awarded one million kronor each, the money is to be used to strengthen the laureates' work.
The Right Livelihood Foundation, which awards the prize, offers the laureates long-term support and sees its role as being their shield and megaphone. Special protection measures are taken for laureates whose lives and freedom are threatened.
Everyone is welcome to nominate candidates for the Right Livelihood Award. After thorough investigations by the foundation's research team, the laureates are selected by an international jury consisting of prominent experts from different parts of the world.
Each year, four awards are given, and a total of 174 laureates from 70 countries have been honored, including whistleblower Edward Snowden (USA), gynecologist Denis Mukwege (DR Congo), and Astrid Lindgren from Sweden. Unlike many other international awards, the Right Livelihood Award has no specific categories because the most significant efforts to meet the challenges of our time often span multiple areas of society.
