Tower of Power
About the show
The legendary funk and soul band Tower of Power returns to Sweden in June. The band, which for decades has attracted full houses wherever they go, is ready to offer the audience at Cirkus a musical experience beyond the ordinary.
After more than five decades on stage, Tower of Power continues to evolve – with the same passion and joy of playing as when it all began in 1968. The band is now looking forward to once again meeting their devoted Swedish audience.
57 years of funk, soul, and immortal energy
For over half a century, Tower of Power has been one of the world's most influential groups in funk and soul. The journey began back in 1968 when Emilio Castillo met baritone saxophonist Stephen “Doc” Kupka and the band – then called The Motowns – took their first steps towards what would become an epoch-making career.
The breakthrough came with the album East Bay Grease, which established their characteristic sound and led to a contract with Warner Brothers. The follow-up Bump City (1972) was a success and gave the band hits like “You’re Still a Young Man” and “Down to the Nightclub”.
During the 70s, the hit parade continued with classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?”, while the band toured intensively and built their legendary live show.
In 2018, Tower of Power celebrated their 50th anniversary with a major concert in their hometown of Oakland – a return documented on the acclaimed album 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater.
Over the years, the band has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music world, including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith, and Bonnie Raitt. With their unique “Oakland soul,” they have created a sound that is immediately recognizable and deeply iconic.
